Sonraí Riaracháin:

Tuairisc:Mothel, a parish of great extent, is richer in place names than any other parish of the barony and furnishes a few mountain and ecclesiastical designations of more than ordinary value. The parish gets its name from the townland on which stood the ancient church and priory. Both church and priory are supposed to have grown out of the early monastic foundation of SS. Cuan and Brogan. This latter however was not at Mothel but at Ballynevin a mile, or so, distant.
