Description:
This Parish derives its name from the townland on which stood the ancient church, as the townland in turn took its title from an entrenched headland which violence of the ocean has wrested from the mainland within modern times. Church and parish were impropriate in the Commandery (Knights Templar) of Killure, and passed at the suppression into the hands of Sir Richard Aylward.
