Description:
The parish name in the present instance is derived from name of the townland on which stood the ancient parochial church. Comprised in the parish is a considerable stretch of mountain, but, as the latter was practically unoccupied till a century and a half since, mountain names are not numerous in proportion. Throughout the parish ran (N. to S.) the ancient highway from Cashel to Ardmore, likewise a branch of the same which made a detour via Lismore, and finally another ancient road - Bothar na Naomh, which led east and west, and crossed the Blackwater river at Affane.
